History:
In the early 1930's, a small group of Christians began meeting together for worship using
Methodist literature in the name of the Community Church. The group met in the former school
house at the corner of Center Street and Highway 225, which was then known as LaPorte Road. Later
the Methodists of the group organized about 20 people and began meeting in July 1939 at the
newly built wood-frame post office at 9th and Center Street.
The church was officially organized as the Deer Park United Methodist Church in October
1940. In December 1946, the first unit (the Fellowship Hall) located at 4th and Ivy Street,
was completed for a total cost of $10,000.
In the late1970's, a long range planning committee recommended the relocation of the
church. A larger site was selected and through a variety of real estate transactions, a 20 acre
tract on East 13th Street was acquired free and clear of debt. A Building Committee was established
and began work that continued through 1983. Work to complete the dream of a new facility was well
underway when the original facilty was sold in March 1989 and construction of the new building
began with a groundbreaking ceremony on July 16th, 1989. In the summer of 1990, the congregation
moved into the new facility.
Changes have occurred to accommodate the increasing membership. A parking lot was added to
the east side of the building along with a new circular drive and a covered walkway. The Family
Life Center Opened in the fall of 2001.
